My Favorite Stalker Romance Books for Readers Who Love Obsessive Heroes

When I first entered my romance reader era, imagine me wandering into this world with light, fluffy tropes on one side and the darker side of romance on the other. While I loved contemporary and lighter romances, the darker books intrigued me. I remember wondering: How can an author actually make this redeemable or even make me like these characters?

Eventually, I started falling in love with the darker side of romance. The right authors know exactly how to build these worlds and characters in a way that pulls you in, and when you’re in the safe space of fiction, it’s okay to enjoy things you would absolutely not tolerate in real life.

One trope I never thought I’d end up loving? Stalker romance.

Because let’s be honest: if anything remotely similar happened to me in real life, I’d be shitting my pants and running for the hills. But give me a fictional man who is completely obsessed, possessive, and incapable of leaving the person he loves alone? Apparently, I’m seated.

If you’re still finding your way around the genre, you can also check out my guide to the best romance books for beginners.

What Is Stalker Romance?

Stalker romance is exactly what it sounds like: a romance book trope where one character (usually the hero) is intensely obsessed with the other person and keeps a very close eye on them.

We are talking about following them around, secretly watching them, knowing a little too much about their lives, cameras, masked moments, constant vigilance… and, of course, plenty of spice.

The level of darkness can vary from book to book. Sometimes, the stalking comes from a possessive need to protect the person they’re obsessed with. Other times? The hero is genuinely unhinged, morally questionable, and has absolutely no intention of leaving his love interest alone.

I love the idea of a fictional hero being completely obsessed with the heroine, following her around like a dark hellhound, keeping her safe, wanting her all to himself, and eventually claiming her.

That said, this trope is definitely not for everyone. Stalker romance often falls under the darker side of romance and can involve themes that some readers may find disturbing or uncomfortable.

So please, always check the content and trigger warnings before picking one up.

My Favorite Stalker Romance Books

Liars Like Us by J.T. Geissinger

liars like us by jt geissinger

Stalker Vibe: 👀👀👀
Darkness: 🖤🖤

Callum McCord is exactly the kind of OTT, morally gray hero I love. He’s secretive, dominant, demanding, and completely obsessed with Emery. And while his stalking isn’t as dark or all-consuming as some of the other books on this list, he is definitely playing a role behind the scenes and hard on his pursuit.

What I really loved about this book, though, was Emery. She is smart, sassy, and absolutely does not let Callum bulldoze her. Their banter and push-and-pull made this such an addictive read, and I’ve actually devoured this one twice already.

If you like your stalker romance with a contemporary feel, an OTT billionaire hero, marriage of convenience, plenty of spice, and a heroine who can give as good as she gets, Liars Like Us is a fun place to start.

To the Chase by Julia Wolf

to the chase by julia wolf

Stalker Vibe: 👀👀
Darkness: 🖤🖤

If you’re just getting into stalker romance, To The Chase is a great place to start. Tore is obsessive, possessive, protective, and definitely stalker-ish, but his motives aren’t dark or threatening. He’s basically been caring for Bea from behind the scenes for years, while also giving her the space she needs.

Julia Wolf is really good at writing those alpha male + tender + obsessive + protective heroes, and Tore is exactly that combination. He knows what he wants, and once he decides he wants Bea back in his life, he is very persistent about getting her.

I also loved Bea. She’s strong, self-reliant, and doesn’t just forget everything that happened between them because Tore comes back into her life. Their relationship has plenty of secrets and hurt to work through, but the romance never felt dramatic.

If you love reading about two people learning to trust each other again, with plenty of found-family goodness along the way, To The Chase should be your next read!

God of Fury by Rina Kent

Stalker Vibe: 👀👀👀
Darkness: 🖤🖤🖤

God of Fury isn’t really a stalker romance. But I had to include it because Nikolai Sokolov is so ridiculously obsessed with Brandon, and stalks him, that he absolutely fits the spirit of this list.

Niko is chaotic, reckless, possessive, obsessive, and completely unapologetic about what he wants. And what he wants is Brandon. He refuses to leave him alone, and is determined to break through Brandon’s walls.

I loved how gone he was for Brandon. He follows him around like a golden retriever looking for attention, is fiercely protective of him, and seems to feel Brandon’s pain as his own.

This was also my first-ever MM romance. NikoBran remains one of my favorite couples in the entire Rinaverse. If you’re looking for an obsessive hero but want something that’s more about possessiveness, obsession, and relentless pursuit than actual stalking, definitely give God of Fury a try.

Tormentor Mine by Anna Zaires

Tormentor Mine Anna Zaires

Stalker Vibe: 👀👀👀👀👀
Darkness: 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

Tormentor Mine is a dark stalker romance with a terrifying, obsessive anti-hero who decides the woman he once targeted is now the woman he wants.

Peter Sokolov starts out wanting revenge, with Sara caught in the middle because of her connection to the man he’s hunting. But his fascination with her quickly turns into full-blown obsession.

Peter is terrifying. He’s dominant, controlling, obsessive, and knows basically everything about Sara—her friends, family, routine, everything. She is afraid of him (rightfully so).

However, throughout the first, you do see Peter’s softer side coming out for Sara. He’s still dark, but Sara becomes this tiny bit of light in his otherwise morbid world. Their chemistry is intense, the suspense kept me glued to the pages, and I genuinely couldn’t stop reading.

If you want a stalker romance that’s dark, dangerous, obsessive, and twisted, pick up Tormentor Mine. Just check the trigger warnings first as this is not a safe read.

Notice by K. Webster

Notice by K Webster

Stalker Vibe: 👀👀👀👀👀
Darkness: 🖤🖤🖤🖤

Notice is a straightforward stalker romance with no mafia, no revenge, just an obsessive hero who becomes laser-focused on the heroine.

Violet has been Grayson’s assistant for six years, always unnoticed and in the background. Grayson has never really paid attention to her, but when she resigns and makes it known how crappy of a boss he has been, he finally “notices” her and becomes determined to have her.

He is a typical obsessive possessive stalker – he watches her, breaks into her house, does some things when she’s asleep, all the while inserting himself into her life, and planning to make her fall for him.

Violet has had a rough life and dealt with more than her share of crap. While Grayson is definitely someone she should run from, there’s something about their relationship that works—two broken pieces coming together.

If you love a dirty-talking stalker who is completely hellbent on possessing the heroine but genuinely cares for her, Notice should be on your list.

Saint by Eva Simmons

Saint by Eva Simmons

Stalker Vibe: 👀👀👀👀👀
Darkness: 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

Saint by Eva Simmons is the first book in the Sigma Sin series, and there’s a lot more going on here than meets the eye.

A masked man kills the FMC’s boyfriend and becomes completely obsessed with her. Saint loves the chase and is absolutely unhinged.

Then there’s the secret society of Sigma Sin, where members must go through trials to secure their place. Our FMC unwittingly becomes a part of this world, and the mystery slowly unravels as the story progresses.

Saint is DARK. Dark mind, dark personality, a psychopath through and through. But what really stood out to me was how he brought out the real darkness of the heroine, too. Add the suspense and the mystery surrounding Saint’s true identity, and you’ve got a story that keeps you hooked.

This isn’t your typical bully romance darkness. It’s more primal, kinky, and spicy, taking things into much darker territory.

If you love masked men, unhinged heroes, secret societies, and primal, spicy dark romance, Saint is definitely worth checking out. Just make sure to look up the trigger warnings first!

In the Shadows by J.A. Owenby

in the shadows by ja owenby

Stalker Vibe: 👀👀👀👀👀
Darkness: 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

In In the Shadows by J.A. Owenby, Ella finds herself torn between two very different men. Death is her obsessive stalker, a dangerous serial killer whose idea of love comes with plenty of darkness, while Sebastian is his seemingly lighter counterpart, offering her a different kind of love. But he has secrets of his own, so things aren’t quite as straightforward as they seem.

The love triangle, the suspense, and a plot twist that you may or may not see coming make this one for readers who enjoy their romances with a darker, more twisted edge.

If you love obsessive stalkers, morally dark heroes, love triangles, and suspenseful romances with plenty of spice, this one’s worth adding to your list. Just check the trigger warnings before diving in!

The Bad Guy by Celia Aaron

The Bad Guy by Celia Aaron

Stalker Vibe: 👀👀👀👀
Darkness: 🖤🖤🖤

Sebastian Lindstrom is a powerful CEO who becomes fixated on Camille (his employee’s girlfriend) and decides he’s going to make her his.

Sebastian doesn’t understand emotions, but Camille brings out his ‘humanity,’ so to speak, and so he sets a plan in motion to claim her.

While The Bad Guy does have dark captivity themes, it’s not dark dark. Sebastian isn’t the kind of completely irredeemable hero you might expect from a villain. And Camille isn’t a doormat heroine, and she does her best trying to escape Sebastian.

There’s something about this brand of obsessive, morally questionable hero that just works for me – he isn’t cruel, nor is he super dark; he is emotionally clueless, a little vulnerable – but I loved him a lot more.

If you love obsessive heroes, stalking, behind-the-scenes manipulation, a hero who isn’t actually a villain, this is your book!

Stone Cold Notes by Julia Wolf

stone cold notes by julia wolf

Stalker Vibe: 👀👀👀
Darkness: 🖤

Wren first connects with Callum through fan letters to his band, and their correspondence eventually turns into something more. But when Wren stops writing, their story comes to an end—or so she thinks. Years later, she lands a job at his music label, and while she remembers their past, it’s unclear whether Callum remembers her. To complicate things further, another band member starts pursuing her.

Stone Cold Notes by Julia Wolf does second-chance romance so well! There’s banter, cute moments, and revelations that make you look at everything differently. Callum is a broody, grumpy, possessive hero and a silent protector, but his devotion to Wren is genuinely heartwarming once he lets her in.

This book being on the list is a spoiler in itself. But that suspense is so well done that you don’t see it coming! But with how Callum is, you definitely could expect it.

I wouldn’t exactly call this a traditional stalker romance, but if you love possessive heroes, second chances, secret obsessions, and a romance with a surprising twist, this is one of the best contemporary romances with a stalker element to check out.

Which Stalker Romance Book Should You Read First?

Not sure which stalker romance to pick up first? It really depends on just how dark and obsessive you want to go. Here are a few places I’d start based on what you’re looking for:

Just Getting Started with Stalker Romance

Start with To the Chase or Stone Cold Notes.

These are a good introduction to the trope because the motivation behind the stalking isn’t dark, all-consuming, or particularly toxic (at least, that’s how it felt to me). The heroes in these books are also some of the least dark guys on my list.

Stalker Romance, But Contemporary

If you want the stalking element without diving too far into the darker side of romance, try To the Chase, Stone Cold Notes, or Liars Like Us.

Liars Like Us does dip into darker territory compared to the other two, but it still feels more contemporary than some of the darker stalker romances on this list.

Classic Stalker Romance

Notice By K. Webster

If you want the classic dark stalker-romance experience—where the hero is actually doing the kind of things you’d expect a stalker to do—this is the one I’d recommend.

Light Dark Stalker Romance

For something that leans dark without going all the way into the most dangerous territory, try The Bad Guy by Celia Aaron.

The hero is absolutely crazy and obsessively fixated on the heroine, but he doesn’t harm her. He’s basically just… plain crazy obsessive.

I’d also put God of Fury by Rina Kent somewhere around here, although I’d add a little disclaimer: it’s an MM romance and isn’t really a stalker romance. However, Nikolai is crazy over Brandon, so if you’re here for obsessive heroes, he’s definitely worth mentioning.

Dangerous Stalker Romance

If you want your stalker romance dark and dangerous, go for In the Shadows by J.A. Owenby, Tormentor Mine by Anna Zaires, or Saint by Eva Simmons.

These are the books I’d save for readers who are comfortable going much darker with the stalking, obsession, and overall relationship dynamics.

Definitely check the trigger and content warnings before picking these up!

Many of these books are available on Kindle Unlimited! Check out my Kindle Unlimited guide to learn more about the service.

Got More Questions?

Are stalker romance books always dark romance?

Not really. Stalker romance and dark romance often overlap, but they aren’t the same thing.

Stalker romance focuses on an obsessive character who watches, follows, or keeps tabs on their love interest, while dark romance is a much broader sub-genre that can explore a wide range of darker themes.

If you’re looking for a lighter stalker romance, you can explore Texting Dr. Stalker by Pepper Winters.

If you’re curious about the different types of romance beyond these darker reads, my romance genre guide breaks them down.

What stalker romance books are trending?

They aren’t on my main list, but some of the popular stalker romances you may have seen on socials include:

  • Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton (I have read the duet, but the second book was kinda traumatizing)
  • Lights Out by Navessa Allen (TBR)
  • That Sik Luv by Jescie Hall
  • Once You’re Mine by Morgan Bridges (On Hold)
  • Pretty Monster by Sheridan Anne (Read it, would recommend!)

What should I know before reading a stalker romance?

Stalker romance explores relationship dynamics that would be toxic or dangerous in real life, but are intentionally explored within the fictional context of the romance. These books often feature an obsessive, possessive hero (or sometimes an anti-hero or villain) who may cross serious boundaries in his pursuit of the heroine.

Depending on the book, you may encounter themes such as stalking, violence, coercion, abuse, or other darker content. Always check the trigger and content warnings before picking up a stalker romance.
